“They Are Home”: Zimbabwe Mourns Repatriation of 14 Limpopo Bus Accident Victims

BEITBRIDGE – Under a heavy sky of grief and the solemn chorus of hymns, the first 14 hearses carrying Zimbabweans killed in the devastating DNC Coaches crash crossed into the country today, greeted by tearful relatives, government officials, and a nation in mourning. The emotional handover at Doves Beitbridge marked a dignified end to a long, harrowing wait. At the Doves Funeral Parlour in the border town, Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe led a poignant mass memorial, thanking all responders for their dedication and issuing a stern, impassioned plea for immediate road safety reform.

Minister Garwe emphasized that this national tragedy has forced the government and public to rank road safety and compliance as the absolute highest priority a desperate effort to optimize travel for every citizen.

A Dignified Return: The Nation Gathers

The first convoy of 14 hearses arrived midday today, October 24, 2025, accompanied by dedicated staff from the Zimbabwe Embassy in Pretoria and private funeral directors. The sight of the coffins, draped in the national colours of grief and respect, reduced many onlookers to tears. They were secured at the Doves Funeral Services parlour, which has become the central hub for final identification, processing, and regional handovers before the deceased are finally laid to rest in their home provinces. The remaining 22 bodies of the 36 Zimbabweans who perished in the tragedy were expected to follow by the evening, completing the full repatriation effort spearheaded by Doves and Zororo-Phumulani.

“The identification process, especially for the children and parents among the deceased, required meticulous effort. We thank the DNA experts from both South Africa and the Zimbabwe Republic Police for their sensitive and professional work in bringing clarity and closure to these families,” said a representative from the psychosocial support team.

Garwe’s Solemn Message: Gratitude and Warning

Addressing the hundreds of residents, officials, and grieving family members gathered at the parlour, Minister Garwe conveyed the nation’s deepest sympathies and highlighted the monumental state response. He thanked the government for the comprehensive US$197,000+ in donations, which covers coffins, transport, food, and the state-assisted burials declared by President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Psychosocial support teams are actively aiding the 40+ injured survivors and their families.

However, the Minister pivoted quickly to the grim lessons of the tragedy, issuing a sharp warning to transport operators and drivers. He urged them to stop speeding, reckless overtaking, and overloading, demanding they prioritize passenger safety over profit.

In a quote that resonated across the somber gathering, Minister Garwe declared:

“No journey is worth a life lost to recklessness. They left as workers, students, parents. They returned as heroes of our shared humanity. Let their memory drive us to safer roads.”

The Limpopo Tragedy and The Call to Action

The accident occurred on October 13, 2025, when the DNC Coaches bus, en route from Gqeberha to Harare via Beitbridge, plunged off the N1 highway near Makhado (Louis Trichardt) in South Africa. The crash claimed 44 lives in total, including 36 Zimbabweans and 8 Malawians. While the cause remains under probe, initial suspicions point to excessive speeding and possible overloading.

The State’s response has been unwavering. Beyond declaring state-assisted funerals, the extensive repatriation logistics were coordinated to ensure every victim is brought home with dignity. Transport Minister Felix Mhona reinforced the government’s commitment to safety, urging stringent enforcement of vehicle fitness and driver compliance. The Traffic Safety Council has been called upon to intensify cross-border checks to prevent a recurrence of this kind of horror.

The mass memorial confirmed that the government will cover all funeral costs for the verified victims, ensuring the families can grieve without the burden of financial stress.bThe immense community outpouring at Beitbridge, where local choirs sang hymns and hundreds gathered to console families, underscored the profound national nature of the tragedy. For a nation that relies heavily on its diaspora, the loss of these 36 citizens is a deep wound, one that has focused the spotlight on the urgent need for systemic road safety reform on one of Southern Africa’s busiest corridors.
