Affectionately known for his tenacious style on the pitch, Sibanda’s passing was confirmed by his family and the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), marking a profound loss for the sport in the nation. According to a heartfelt post from his nephew on X (formerly Twitter), the 70-year-old former CAPS United and national team star died in a tragic car accident while swerving to avoid a pothole on the road. A report in The Chronicle stated that, according to family spokesperson Charlton Sibanda, who is also the son of Charles Sibanda, the funeral wake will take place at Farm 43 in Marirangwe, located along Mubaira Road in Mhondoro.

ZIFA released an official obituary on their website, extending condolences and celebrating Sibanda’s illustrious career. The statement, issued by the ZIFA Media and Communications Department, described him as a “former Zimbabwe international defender” whose contributions “will forever be etched in our history.” As tributes pour in from fans, former teammates, and football enthusiasts, Sibanda’s legacy as a player, coach, and mentor continues to inspire generations.

Early Life of ‘Raw Meat’ and rise in football

Charles “Raw Meat” Sibanda’s football journey began in 1971 with the Castle Lions Under-16 team, which later became Salisbury Sables. After rising through the ranks, he made a mark at Hippo Valley FC from 1976 to 1978, where he earned a reputation as a strong defender and also took on administrative roles. His nickname, “Raw Meat,” came from his fierce, aggressive tackling style. Versatile and tactically intelligent, Sibanda played in various positions including left-back, centre-back, and defensive midfielder, earning admiration across Zimbabwe during a transformative period for the nation’s football after independence.

Career with CAPS United and the National Team

In 1979, Sibanda joined CAPS United, affectionately known as ‘Kepekepe’ or the ‘Green Machine’, where he truly shone. His uncompromising defending and versatility were key in helping the team secure its first top-flight league title. A fan favorite, his hard tackles and fearless style of play made him a household name across Zimbabwe. Sibanda also earned numerous caps for the national team, the Warriors, proudly representing his country in international matches.

His international experience included the 1983 tour to England, where he played in a friendly against Coventry City. After retiring from football in 1985, Sibanda smoothly transitioned into coaching and administration, continuing his lifelong commitment to the game. He moved to Bulawayo, where he took on a senior personnel management role while also mentoring young talents at Archer Stars and later Eagles FC. At Eagles, he worked closely with the late Boy Ndlovu, helping to shape the next generation of footballers.

Sibanda’s coaching journey extended beyond Zimbabwe, with successful stints at TAFIC Stars and Gaborone United in Botswana. Upon returning to Zimbabwe, he coached teams like Arcadia United and Air Zimbabwe Jets. One of his most notable contributions was signing a young Benjani Mwaruwari from University of Zimbabwe FC to Air Zimbabwe Jets, a move that would launch Mwaruwari’s career to international fame, including a stint in the English Premier League.

In his later years, Sibanda embraced a quieter life away from the limelight. He became a farmer, managing a chicken-breeding and dairy operation alongside his wife, Judy, whom he married over 35 years ago. As his nephew shared in an X post, Sibanda “had retired from all things football, living a quiet life farming.” This shift reflected his humble and grounded nature, far from the intensity of his playing days.
