This was an organized attack that took place in the early hours of the morning, at 12:40 a.m. Its main goal was to damage and silence one of Zimbabwe’s most respected and vital centers for democratic debate, right at the moment when the nation’s political tension was reaching a peak. The destruction of the SAPES venue itself, a place known for open political dialogue, carries a heavy symbolic weight.

A Direct Hit on the Center of Disagreement

The attackers went beyond simple vandalism. Reports confirm they completely burned out the historic seminar room, a venue that has hosted critical discussions on governance and democracy since 1987. Furthermore, the assailants took the trouble to kidnap the night guard and secure the main gate with brand new padlocks. This systematic approach – destroying, removing witnesses, and locking down the site points to a high level of planning and coordination that goes far beyond what typical criminals would attempt.
